"Open if you see Stephen", "Open when Bored", "Hand to Nat then point and Laugh"
We've all had them, most of us have written them. In our last game our crew added full plots entirely in contingency envelopes since we managed to print and stuff the rest of the game early for a change.
So hey... what works, what doesn't, and what about that player who opens and reads all of them at the start of the game.
Flip side -- always have contingency plots available in case the players eat all the ones you wrote and actually are looking for more rather than just making stuff up themselves. A lot.
Seed any bits needed out into the players sheets in the character's color background and spare item cards. Have cast and GM played roles as needed to help push things along. If you can hide it in contingency envelopes for GM triggered events never announced. "Open envelope for Event Q"
